I’m out in LA visiting my girlfriend for the holiday weekend, flew in last night. Plan was to drive up to Fresno and then do Yosemite and Sequoia parks (mostly just sightseeing and short walks, no major hiking). However, as we were going up the mountains on the 5, the check engine light came on and the car started misfiring. Ended up getting off the highway but the car was stalling and not running right so we just pulled over and called triple A. I had gotten the oil changed a few hours earlier at a quick lube so at first I was like oh my did they fuck up.. But oil was fine and it was symptomatic of a spark problem anyways. Got towed to a shop (in the middle of nowhere mind you) and they diagnosed the code as a cam position sensor. On my girlfriends Civic that we were driving, changing that sensor is much more complicated than on my miata. You have to get under the timing belt so the car is going to get a full timing belt job (it’s at 84k miles on the original TB). Makes sense to just do it now even though manual says like 120k which is longer than I expected. Anyways, it was too late to get the parts today so we are stranded here for the night and they will fix it up in the morning. Going to just drive home after that and make different plans for the weekend. Probably going to rent a car and go up the coast someplace. Maybe drive a little bit of the PCH. Might do San Diego and just take Amtrak. Any who, glad we found a holiday Inn right by the shop so we will comfortably watch Netflix and get some fast food for dinner. Haha what a great start to the holiday weekend! And of course it’s all my fault for the car acting up. I love my girlfriend though so I understand she is just worried about her car.

TL;DR Car broke down in the middle of nowhere, getting a great start to a holiday lol.

That kind of blows, but at least you got a good story out of it? And if your girlfriend is anything like my wife any night in a hotel is a good night.

Im guessing Frazier Mountain Park??

It’s hotter than blazes up here. Go south or to the coast.

Well we are currently stuck in Lebec, CA waiting for the repairs. They got the parts in around 11 and the 4-5 hour labor should get us out of here by evening. That is unless the timing belt broke, but I’m hopeful that didn’t happen. Car was still running (terribly so, but running and starting) so it should be alright. Going to head back to LA afterwards and do something more low key for the weekend.

Best of luck to you guys. Hope the repair goes well and you have some of your holiday weekend still left. Lots of fun things to do in LA.

Yup, cam position sensor got replaced and we were on our way back to LA around 330pm. Picked up a rental from LAX to be safe with the rest of the weekend. Got a nice upgrade to a Mercedes convertible and am currently enjoying the Orange County high-roller life lol. San Diego fireworks were pretty sweet!
